When an Article Starts a Conversation
By Curt Woodman
One of the unexpected pleasures of publishing the Hidden Circle Gazette is discovering which articles quietly disappear into the archive… and which ones develop a life of their own.
Our recent feature, The Art of Hosting, clearly belonged to the second category.
Many readers agreed with its central point that great rooms are shaped as much by their hosts as by their walls. Others felt we had unintentionally diminished the work of builders by using them as a contrast to make that point.
Having read the discussion, we think that criticism is fair.
Our intention was never to suggest that building is somehow less valuable than hosting, or that success should be measured solely by visitor numbers. Some of the most remarkable creations in 3DX are works of art first and social venues second. They deserve admiration whether they host ten visitors, a hundred, or none at all.
What we were trying to explore was a narrower idea: if your goal is to create a thriving social room, building alone is rarely enough. Hosting matters. It always will.
That does not make builders any less important. Quite the opposite. Without builders there would be no worlds to explore, no clubs to dance in, no forests to get lost in, no castles to admire, and no homes to call our own. Every memorable gathering begins with someone imagining a place that did not exist the day before.
The discussion itself has reminded us of something important. Building and hosting are not opposing philosophies. They are complementary arts. One shapes the environment. The other shapes the experience. The most unforgettable rooms usually have a little of both.
If our article gave the impression that builders exist merely to support hosts, then we could have expressed ourselves better.
The Gazette has never aimed to deliver the final word on any subject. We would much rather publish ideas that spark thoughtful conversation than opinions everyone quietly agrees with. Judging by the responses, that conversation is alive and well.
And that, we think, is worth building too.

Just to say the Hosting article was about Hosting it was judged to hastily – It was an excellent articleI felt it by instinct – Thank you for bringing it up – so important Hosting & Welcoming your friend and new comers to 3DX.
