Voices from The Lake

Nine years is a remarkably long time in 3DXChat. Rooms come and go, communities form and disappear, and places that once attracted hundreds of visitors can quietly fade into obscurity. Yet, since 2017, The Lake has remained a familiar destination for generations of players. Through countless updates, changing seasons and the comings and goings of its visitors, Keely's creation has become one of the most enduring landmarks in our virtual world.

Over the years, The Hidden Circle Gazette has followed The Lake's story on several occasions. We've spoken with Keely about its beginnings, explored its many transformations and admired the dedication that goes into maintaining a place like this for so long. We've written about the lighthouse, the pavilion, the spectacular sunsets and the many little corners that make The Lake such a distinctive place. But there is another side to its story, one that is perhaps even more important than the room itself.

For all the care that goes into its design, The Lake would be little more than a beautiful collection of pixels without the people who visit it. Some have been coming here for years, while others discovered it only recently. Friendships have been made, romances have blossomed, weddings have been celebrated and countless conversations have taken place against the backdrop of that familiar water front. For some, The Lake is simply a pleasant place to relax after a long day. For others, it has become a regular meeting place, a refuge from everyday worries or somewhere they feel genuinely at home.

So, for this ninth anniversary, we decided to do something a little different. Rather than asking Keely to tell us more about The Lake, we turned to the people who know it from the other side: the visitors who return day after day, the familiar faces who give the place its character and the people whose lives have, in one way or another, been touched by it. We invited them to share their memories, their experiences and what keeps bringing them back.

What follows is their story, told in their own words.1

Nine years, countless visitors and more memories than anyone could possibly collect in a single article. These are just a handful of the stories that have unfolded around The Lake, but together they offer a glimpse of what makes this place so special. The scenery may be virtual, but the friendships, affection and sense of belonging are very real. As The Lake celebrates another anniversary, we can only hope that Keely continues to find the inspiration and enthusiasm to keep its shores welcoming visitors for many years to come.

Happy anniversary, Keely, and thank you for giving so many people a place to call home.
